Tenants: Apt managers said nothing about asbestos

THRIFT SHOP BEHIND ME COMING UP AT 5:00. JEFF: Tenants OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX SAY THEY’VE BEEN LEFT IN THE DARK, AFTER LAWSUITS WERE FILED ALLEGING THAT ASBESTOS WAS FOUND DURING RENOVATIONS. JENNIFER: OUR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER GABRIELLE KAROL HAS BEEN COVERING THIS STORY. SHE IS RIGHT NOW AND — LIVE RIGHT NOW AND BRINGS US AN UPDATE. GABRIELLE: THE COMPLEX WE’RE TALKING ABOUT IS CALLED COMMONS AT SYLVAN HIGHLANDS, WHICH IS OWNED BY TANDEM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT. THE FIRST LAWSUIT WAS FILED BY TWO FORMER EMPLOYEES LAST MONDAY. THEY SAY THEY WERE FIRED AFTER ASBESTOS WAS FOUND, AS PART OF AN ATTEMPT TO COVER UP THIS DISCOVERY. A SECOND, CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT WAS THEN FILED BY ANOTHER FORMER EMPLOYEE AND RESIDENT OF SYLVAN HIGHLANDS. STILL, RESIDENTS TELL ME THEY’VE HEARD NOTHING FROM TANDEM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT ABOUT THE CLAIMS.I THINK THERE SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF PUBLIC STATEMENT AT LEAST, IF NOT TO EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, AT LEAST SENT OUT TO ALL OF US LIVING HERE, BECAUSE WE ARE JUST RUNNING AROUND IN THE DARK, NOT SURE WHAT TO DO. GABRIELLE: OUR MULTIPLE CALLS TO TANDEM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS HAVE NOT BEEN RETURNED. WE HAVE Likewise NOW LEARNED THAT DEQ WAS CONTACTED BY OREGON OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION ABOUT THE ASBESTOS ALLEGATIONS. DEQ IS CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHETHER THE PROPERTY MANAGER HIRED AN INSPECTOR TO DO A MANDATORY ASBESTOS SURVEY.
